Level Name: J9 =============== Version 1.1 Release Date: July 24, 2004 Designer: Joshua M. ([TA]One's nephew) Author/Level Builder: [TA]One [TA]One contact info: Liger0777@hotmail.com Description =========== This level is designed for anarchy. J9 is a small, fast-paced level, recommended for 2 to 5 players. The level's size/shape allows all ships to do well in it. If you like nonstop, nowhere-to-hide dogfighting action, then you should like this level. J9 supports team anarchy and hoard. For team games - 2v2 or 3v3 is recommended. (It also supports ctf and monsterball. But due to the asymmetrical layout of the bases, ctf and monsterball are not recommended.) Level Hosting Info ================== When hosting for 2 players, a weapon respawn of 30-40 seconds is recommended. For a game of 5 to 6 players, a respawn of 20-30 seconds is recommended. Given how small the level is, even if the MassDriver is banned, the level will still keep its fast pace. So if this level gets any hosting time - server ops can ban the MD if they choose, without slowing down the gameplay. Mods ===== Apart from minor modifications I did with lights/textures, there is only one mod in this level - a flare mod. I guess you could call that a minor mod as well. Anyway, I modded the flare so that it no longer gives off ambient light. This keeps the flare-happy types from killing the framerates of some players with certain graphics cards. (I also gave the flare a red corona.) Although it is possible to mod the Black Pyro's flare so it doesn't give off ambient light either, I didn't put a BP flare mod in this level. Putting Black Pyro mods in a level can cause the game to crash for players under certain circumstances. This level and any subsequent level(s) I release will never have a mod for the Black Pyro for that reason. I have no dislike for the Black Pyro, I just don't like levels with mods that crash D3. J9 Background Info ================== This level is not of my own design. Full credit for the design goes to my nephew, Joshua. The story on how J9 came to be is as follows: Joshua knew that I played Descent 3 and that I dabbled with the D3edit level editor. A few days after he had just turned 9 years old, he was visiting us. He has always liked to draw, even before he was 2 years old. So I took no notice of him drawing in his notebook when he visited us on this particular day. But he was using a small plastic ruler, protractor, and triangle - as opposed to the freehand drawing that he normally does. After not too long, he came over to me with his notebook and said,"Here, these are some drawings I made for you. You can use these to make Descent levels." I smiled and looked through his notebook, not knowing what to expect. Amazed at what I saw, I showed his mother (my sister) what he had done. The two of us were laughing in disbelief. It had taken him only minutes to come up with at least 30 designs. The amazing thing was that using the ruler, protractor, and triangle for each design - and even though one tracing of the protractor and triangle could easily take up a third of the space on a notebook page - every design on every page was completely different. There weren't two pages that looked alike! I doubt there are many adults that could churn out 30 unique looking designs using the same tools in so short a time. Impressed, and amazed at his creativity, I was determined to make a level for him. I thumbed through the pages looking for a design that I thought would work well for a D3 level. After making my decision, I took the page out of his notebook and started working on the level that same day. With his drawing in hand, I completed the beginnings of the level and the overall shape. I had no further need for his drawing as far as the design-aspect of the level was concerned, but I intended to hold onto the drawing so I could scan it and use it as the level's loadscreen. Unfortunately, my nephew left later that day and the drawing was nowhere to be found. He thought he left his drawing at my place, and I asked him to keep looking for it at his house. The days went by. In that time, I completed a limited-release "J9 Beta" version of the level. But as the months went by and hope began to fade that his drawing would ever resurface, I put the level on hold. Then one day, I got a phone call saying that his dad had found the drawing. I could finally finish the level with his drawing as the loadscreen! Man was I happy. Looking at the loadscreen you can see how I made a point of staying true to my nephew's design. J9 is not just Joshua's design - it is now... finally... his level. Special Thanks To: ================== [TA]Marek, for encouraging me (some three or four years ago) to start dabbling with D3Edit. (He never thought I would release a level. He was nearly right.) [TA]Black Widow, for getting me started on how to do mods. The mods he has done are awesome. Check out his level "Weapons Testing Complex" if you haven't already. I asked him if I could use his Gatling Gun (vauss mod) in this version of J9. He gave me the okay, but I decided to first release J9 without any modified weapons. GameEdit.com for hosting the tutorials that got me started with D3Edit. And of course thank you to all those who took the time to create those tutorials. I especially thank Schplurg, whose 10-lesson tutorial I printed out. Without his tutorial I'm sure I never would have bothered trying to learn D3Edit. Everyone in Team Alliance who helped me beta test J9 and gave suggestions, and especially [TA]Raid for hosting my beta version for auto-download. I would also like to thank those who posted to the DBB with their suggestions when I did the limited-release beta. And thank you ESA and Gonzo for hosting the J9 beta on your servers. www.descentbb.net, an invaluable resource for the Descent community. GameEdit.com, www.planetdescent.com, www.koolbear.com, and www.descentforum.net for the level hosting service they provide.
