Version 1.1 This is the documentation for Jonadab's Domain, a mission for registered Descent. Jonadab's Domain was created by Jonadab the Unsightly One, who is also known as Nathan Eady. I hope you like my mission. This documentation will be in question-and-answer form. If the first few questions seem mundane, skip down a little. There is more useful information in the later questions. IS THIS YOUR FIRST MISSION? Yes. HOW DID YOU MAKE IT? I use DEVIL and HAMM. DOES IT WORK IN MULTIPLAYER MODE? Yes. I think all the levels should work in all modes of play, including cooperative, anarchy, robo-anarchy, and single-player-mode. If I am wrong, PLEASE let me know so I can fix it. (See contact information below.) HOW MANY LEVELS DOES IT HAVE? The Happy Pain Domain is one. The Bad Red Place is two. (Originally called Red Bloody Demon Heck.) True Darkness of Malgore is three. New Indianapolis Recreational Facility is four. Daroga's Dark Domain is five. (Mark Harris (Daroga) helped make this one.) The Big Easy is six. (I have renamed it since, but I do not remember its new name.) Eat Your Heart Out Picasso is seven. The MegaRoom is eight. The Leibensraum Facility is nine. Jonadab's Third Reality is ten. (Originally was level one.) The Armory is the secret level. That makes eleven, if you count it. ANY PLANS TO MAKE MORE LEVELS? Yeah, but not for this mission. I'll make a new mission altogether. I've already started one level for it: "Introduction to the ;" should be interesting when I finish it. Give me a little time, though. (This was written November, 1996. Give me a couple of months, at least, maybe longer.) HOW DO I PLAY THIS MISSION? Assuming you have a registered copy of Descent, just place JONADAB.HOG and JONADAB.MSN in your Descent directory (likely C:\DESCENT or C:\GAMES\DESCENT or somesuch). Then start Descent, start a new game, and choose Jonadab's Domain instead of Descent First Strike. CAN I PLAY THIS WITH THE SHAREWARE VERSION? Not unless you're VERY good with machine code. (Even then it's illegal.) CAN I PLAY IT WITH DESCENT II? I do not know. I have seen converters on the Web for making Descent levels work in Descent II, but I have never tried it. (I don't have a registered copy of Descent II, and I do not know anyone who does.) I assume you would need to use HAMM (or the equivalent) to extract the RDL files from the HOG file before you could convert them. THESE LEVELS ARE TOO HARD. HOW DO I WIN? First, read the breifings. They contain some very useful information (e.g. certain doors are not intended to be opened unless you really want the extra challenge.) Second, use your automap regularly. If you still have trouble, start it up and save a game immediately. Then use a saved game editor (e.g. DesEdit -- these are available for download all over the Web.) to set your laser level to 17 and your shields to, oh, I don't know, maybe 30,000 or so. That should make just about any level way too easy. Alternatively, use the cheat codes: GABBAGABBAHEY RACERX PORGYS IS THERE A SECRET LEVEL? Yes. However, it is the one exception to the all-modes-of-play statement made above. I do not recommend going to it in any mode except single-player mode. WHY? It's really nothing but a weapons refill. It is unnecessary in multi-player mode. Play it and see. HOW DO I GET THERE? In the Leibensraum Facility, go through the red-access door. There is a secret door around somewhere (or maybe it is a holographic panel -- I forget). Find it. Notice that you cannot open the door behind it. It opens automatically when you blow the reactor. There's your secret exit. Have fun. WHERE IS THE STUPID EXIT FROM THE HAPPY PAIN DOMAIN? Ah, the worst part about that level (except the nasty little yellow-access-room you all visited against the best of advice) is the location of the exit. It is behind the point of infusion. You have to blow the reactor, then fly back out to the brig. You will now see the previously hidden exit door. It will open with a laser blast. THE BREIFINGS PROMISED MYRIAD WEAPONS. WHERE ARE THEY? A great many of them are hidden. In the Happy Pain Domain, for example, there are a number of holographic panels in the floors, walls, and ceilings. Behind these panels are hidden things, like lives and weapons. EXAMPLE: Get the blue access key. Open the blue access door. Kill everything in the room. Now, look at the ceiling. One light is broken. Shoot it. Notice there is no impact from your lasers. This is because that panel is holographic. Fly through it, and you get a life and something else. (I forget what, exactly.) NOT ALL OF THE HOLOGRAPHIC PANELS ARE MARKED LIKE THIS ONE. There are two plasma cannons available in the Happy Pain Domain, among other weapons. The only way to get a fusion cannon is behind the yellow door, though. HOW DO I GET THAT LAST HOSTAGE IN THE HAPPY PAIN DOMAIN? IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE? That information is classified. HOW CAN I FIND OUT, ANYWAY? First, learn to use DEVIL. Now use a HOGfile utility (like HAMM) to extract the file HAPYPAIN.RDL from JONADAB.HOG. Load it up in DEVIL and have a look. DO I HAVE TO KILL ALL THOSE HEAVY (RED) HULKS IN THE SHOOT-THROUGH AT THE TOP OF THE SHAFT IN THE BAD RED PLACE? No. However, there is an easier way... WHAT IS THE EASIER WAY? That information is classified. HINT: It involves a strategically-placed secret corridor, which you can easily locate using the full-map cheat. WHAT'S UP WITH THE ENTRY-ROOM IN THE MALGORIAN TRUE DARKNESS INSTALLATION? There are two robots, instructed to sit still and shoot, hidden behind holographic panels. Fortunately, the panels are brightly lit and easy to identify. WHERE ARE THE RED, YELLOW, AND BLUE ACCESS DOORS IN THE TRUE DARKNESS INSTALLATION OF MALGORE? You do need all three keys, but not until after you blow the reactor. WHERE IS THE REACTOR IN TRUE DARKNESS OF MALGORE? It is behind that door you can't open. HOW DO I GET THAT DOOR OPEN? You have to rescue the hostages. HOW DO I FIND THEM? You may have to fly through a lava-filled tunnell... IN TRUE DARKNESS OF MALGORE, I SHOT THESE ROBOTS, AND ALL THESE SHIELDS APPEARED -- MORE THAN I COULD USE. LATER, WHEN I NEEDED THEM, I CAME BACK, AND THEY WERE GONE. Such a shame. Actually, this can happen in any level. Shields, energy, and concussion missiles droped by robots disappear after a set amount of time. That's just the way they made the game. If you really don't like it, write Interplay and tell them to fix it in Descent III. I HATE THE EAT YOUR HEART OUT PICASSO LEVEL. Well, it wasn't designed to be easy. DOES IT HAVE AN EXIT? No. I wanted you to start out in the Megaroom with level 1 lasers. THAT'S MEAN. Yes, but you should have enough lives by that point to let you get by. Anyway, with that many mega-missiles laying around, who needs a primary weapon? WHY DID YOU MAKE THE MEGAROOM? Well, mostly I made it for Anarchy mode, but I decided it would be a good challenge in single-player mode, too. ANY PARTING COMMENTS OR CONTACT INFORMATION? Sure. Be sure to read the breifings for this mission. Some of them contain important information. In case of questions, contact me. Until May of 1997 you can e me at the following address: naeady@grace.edu Otherwise, snail me at this address: Nathan Eady 307 Gill Avenue Galion, OH 44833 END OF DOCUMENTATION FILE JONADAB.TXT. Enjoy the mission. (Or don't; I'll never know the difference, anyway.)
