======================================================= Descent: Anniversary Edition Level - Hazard Zone ======================================================= This level was created by Christopher Andrese Feel free to send comments to the author on AOL as "Mr Dscnt" An anarchy level ( but it works okay in solo too ). A battle inside a giant asteroid with floating asteroids inside. The level is a fair size, and I have built it to fit many flying styles. There are areas of wide open space, and other rooms more closed in with the asteroids. Maybe Harrison Ford would appreciate this level. If the level doesn't seem made for solo ( no pun intended ), it isn't. The robots are there to make it interesting since you people judging this probably won't get to try it with anarchy the way it was intended. This text file is divided into various sections. I. Bug Fixes and Warnings (all read this!!) II. The story of Hazard Zone III. The story of Asteroid NG379 IV. Technical Garbage ( If you're interested in what work was put in to make this level and you understand how the level designing works, read this. Contest judges look at this too if you like ). I. Bug Fixes and Warnings There are a few bug that are in Devil .99 that I just couldn't get out of the level. The doors sometimes behave strangely. In solo mode, you shouldn't have too much trouble with it, but in anarchy, you will probably notice some wierd things. Ex. if one door is opened, and then another one, before the first one closes, the second door may become a holo-texture ( wall you can fly through ) when door one closes. Also, they sometimes never close after you open them. The Big bug, though is that somehow, the exit door opens whenever any other door is opened, sort of like a reflection. The only advice here is not to exit unless the self destruct sequence has been activated. In anarchy, if you do, will probably result in you waiting for a long time for everyone else to finish, or it might crash altogether. The other thing, is that this level is much more complex than normal descent levels. I highly recommend a Pentium 100 or higher. The more complex rooms even slow down the P100!! And, if descent appears to lock up at any time, give it a little time before you reboot. It may come back after a few seconds. This level does not crash with Descent 1.0 I haven't tested it on anything higher. II. The story of Hazard Zone In a solar system not too far away, there is another thriving civilization similar to that of Earth's. The planet is united as a whole and recently has made contact with our world. And following a time of fear of each other's existance, interplanetary relations have now been established. The planet's name is Polaris VI. Polaris is a glacial planet. Its entire surface if covered with ice. It was once very much like Earth. After the Polaris star cooled down, however, an stellar ice age hit the planet. Life adapted to the changes and eventually, humanoid life evolved. Now life on Polaris thrives. Like Earth, Polaris is practically bursting at the seams with violence. Although the people have good intentions and are good at heart, they all have a dark side like the people on Earth. Despite this, their crime rate is very low. Crime on their planetary scale is only a little bit higher than that of all of New York City!! The violence is there, but it isn't being displayed on the streets. Polaris has found out what to do with its violence. About 5 of our years ago, the young prince of Polaris, decided to take the violence problem into his own hands. He came up with an idea for a gladitorial game. It consisted of a huge arena, full of guns and ammo in which combatants fought one another to the death. This show became so popular, that he decided to create a second game show, with space ships. He named this game show Hazard Zone. Pilots compete inside specially designed mines and caves. The battles are broadcast live via satellite over the entire planet. Not only can anyone be a contestant, but big time winners have the option of staying and working for the station. Even people with something as simple as a grudge could comptete in the game. After a few years, the game became included in the judicial system. Now convicts and accused could fight for their freedom in the mines and they also have the option of working for the station. You might not like it that some of the most highly payed people on the planet are jail-birds, but hey, I said it was a lot like Earth. It also shouldn't be surprising that now, the best lawyers are retired space navy veterans!! This game's popularity is now reaching Earth. Some Hazard Zone surveyers got together with some Earth computer programmers, and have just adapted one of the Hazard Zones for play on Descent. This is the first of some levels that will be adapted for Descent play. III. The Story of Asteroid NG379 (Hazard Zone 11) A few years after Hazard Zone was place on the air, a giant asteroid sighted heading on a collision course for Polaris. Just as the space navy was about to head out to destroy it, the prince ordered it stopped, and sent his Hazard Zone design and work team to convert the asteroid into a Hazard Zone. In it, they placed a nuclear reactor with a timed detonator attached. For the finale of the battle, the survivors were to destroy the reactor and escape before the chain reaction blew up the entire asteroid. Much of the tunneling was rushed, due to the fact they only had 5 months before the asteroid would hit the planet. Upon completion, players were selected for the battle, and the most widely watched episode of Hazard Zone was put on the air. After the battle, the asteroid was destroyed, and Polaris history was made. This is the first level adapted for Descent. IV. Technical Garbage Total Number of cubes, 900. ( the exact max amount that Descent allows )! Total number of objects, 86. Creating this level was a complete nightmare. Not only does Devil .99 have bugs, I couldn't get the level to work at all with updated versions. The asteroids were pretty tough, and the reactor room(s) were a total nightmare. The complexity of the level causes holes to temporarily appear in walls. Just bear with it. There was nothing I could do to fix the bugs that still exist in the level. If you understand how descent and devil works, you can appreciate the work that was put into this.
