Level: Asteroids v1.0 Author: Robert 'SuperSheep' Piontek rpiontek@virtual-creations.com Copyright: (c)2002 Virtual-Creations. All Rights Reserved. Most sound effects and some images copyright Atari. Modes: Single-Player only Description =========== Single player recreation of the popular '70's game, 'Asteroids'. The purpose of the game is to blow up asteroids and any saucers and to not get killed. You are given 4 ships at the beginning of the game and each time you accumulate 10,000 points, you are awarded another ship. As in the original, you have one weapon that will destroy asteroids and saucers with one shot. Your ship will be blown up by running into asteroids, the marker buoys, saucers, or saucer shots. The Hyperspace drive warps you from one location to another and will occasionally malfunction destroying your ship. Points values ------------- Big Asteroid: 20 Medium Asteroid: 50 Small Asteroid: 100 Large Saucer(Wally): 200 Small Saucer(Beaver): 1000 Design Notes ============ All of the original sound effects are in here plus some new ones as well as the original saucers, asteroids, hyperspace jump and gameplay have been tweaked to be as close to the original as possible. Some differences include the addition of sliding, and drag that is substantially higher than the original. I feel these changes enhanced gameplay as using the original controls and physics didn't really feel right. Due to the fact that this level uses almost all custom objects and scripting for everything, neither save game or demo playback work properly. Save game will crash your machine and demo playback shows serious anomalies like leaving dead rocks lying around and no custom textures. Finally... I tried many different ways of creating the playing field, from having a box where everything bounced off of the walls, to forcefields and finally the approach I settled on which uses face warping. Each face is bounded by 4 marker buoys and a non-lethal force field. When you fly into the face you will be instantly transported to the other side of the level. This applies to your ship, asteroids, saucers and weapons. This was the most fun for me and my friends to play and provided the best flow in my opinion. Source code & Future versions ============================= I would love to see this turned into a MOD as levels limit severely what you can do in D3. If some level designer good with MOD's, scripting so desires, send me an email and I'll send you the source code.
