Note - just putting this in your missions directory is not sufficient. You must extract this file to another directory and use the installation program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ My radio crackles: "Material defender, do you read me, over." Ugh, what happened? Have I been reincarnated as Dravis' underwear? Where are the damn vent controls.... Phew, much better. "Material defender, this is Dravis. Please respond immediately!" Since when could someone could feel this bad without getting seriously drunk first. Did it ever occur to the bureaucrats to put asprin in the onboard first aid kit? Probably not. It would save them enough money to buy an extra bag of coffee for the office coffee pot, or an extra roll of red tape. "Material defender! Report your status!" Maybe if I talk to him he'll pay me and shut up. Sure he will. More likely monkeys will fly out of my butt. Well, lets see what Moronicus Bureaucratius wants this time. "Material defender, we have a major problem back in the Sol system. We are cancelling all payments to you for unsatifactory work." Unsatisfactory work? What is this earthworm babbling about? "It seems when we brought our mines back online, the infections reoccurred. Clearly you did not successfully exterminate the alien presence in our mines" Fools... They probably saved a few bucks by reusing parts out of the old computer cores. Those things are buried deep so they would survive a nuclear explosion, and hopefully tell what went wrong. Of course, the morons didn't even consider there might be a self-replacating program in their system. "We also found a transciever on Charon, which seemed to be in contact with that asteroid you destroyed. Since that transciever went into operation, the robots started exibiting noticable improvements in their intellegence. This improved intelligence has continued since you destroyed the asteroid. " Wonderful. Next thing they will tell me is that the mines are producing all the nastiest robots seen to date. Or worse. "Our intercepts also indicate some data sent concerning new robot designs, but intelligence has not seen any of these designs put into production at this time." Maybe they just didn't look. I'd round up their intelligence department and send them into the mine first, but I don't think they actually exist. "If you wish to not have all payments due you under your contract canceled, return immediately to the Sol system and perform your duties as stated in the contract." Now how am I supposed to do that? Click my heels together, saying "There's no place like home"? "Coordinates are being downloaded to your onboard computer." Whoa! Hold it! This crazy drive just threw me halfway to oblivion and they just want me to turn it on? This is going WAY to far. "We are also downloading a new control program for your warp drive. We believe it was a software fault that overloaded the drive in the first place. " How convenient. I wonder what size kickback would have been required to get me home if this emergency hadn't popped up. "We have also retrieved a few weapons similar to those you used in your current exploits. They should fit your Pyro-GX. We are now beaming what few we have into the mines." How gracious of them. Maybe there will be enough down there to actually make a difference. Then again, maybe if Dravis had wings maybe he could fly. I ought to try that in the name of science. "We have also have a number of guidebots programmed with information pertaining to each mine. We also have headlights for your Pyro-GX. These will be beamed in with you." Great. Maybe if I were to turn thirty of those tour guides loose in his office he'd change his mind. "Download complete. Engage when ready, material defender. May you perform your duties completely, this time. " Work for PTMC they said. Make lots of money they said. Have a long and profitable relationship, they said. As soon as I can get out of this, I'm going into professional basket weaving. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To install: 1: Place all files in this archive into a temporary directory. 2: Run INSTALL. 3: Enter the paths to Descent and Descent 2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Single Player: Yes Coop: Yes Anarchy: Yes Team Anarchy: Yes Flag: Yes, but it's relatively untested. Converter: Jon Barnhart aka Mjolnir (jon@inmind.com) Editor: A modified Devil 2.1g (The mods are incorporated into 2.1h) Time: Way too much (weeks) Permissions: This may only be used by owners of the full versions of Descent 1 and Descent 2. The resulting hog file created by this converter may not be distributed. It is covered by the same copyrights as Descent 1. The program PATCH.EXE is copyright 1996 by Jon Barnhart. Distribution of these levels for any kind of fee is strictly prohibited unless written permission is obtained both from Jon Barnhart and Parallax Software. I do not know that Parallax would ever give such permission. I contacted Parallax about doing the conversion, and they said that so long as the conversion required the original full Descent 1, it was ok to distribute something to make it playable in Descent 2. The original Descent 1 hog file is still copyrighted and is in no way in the public domain. "Descent: First Strike" is still on the market. Gamplay Notes: 1. On secret levels, you must shoot switches instead of get keys. The switches are marked by the same color lights as the door they unlock. 2. Secret levels should be finished BEFORE destroying the base level. If you die on a secret level with the base level destroyed, you lose EVERYTHING. 2. On secret levels you CANNOT save or load. I added 10 additional extra lives per secret as compensation. Play on any real skill level and you'll probably need them. 3. The robots now have a much higher IQ. This is not going to be as easy the second time around. 4. The bosses on levels 7 and 27 have been replaced by D2 bosses. This is because the D1 bosses would just sit in one place and not move. The new bosses' strengths are about the same as the original D1 bosses. 5. The boss on level 27 is only vulnerable to material weapons. There is a gauss cannon lurking nearby. I would suggest you find it. This also means he is vulnerable to mega-missles as well. Hmmm.... 6. There is only one helix cannon available in the game. I buried it as well as I could, without making it completely impossible to find. 7. There are earth shakers buried in the game, but you won't get them in multiplayer. 8. There is NO phoenix cannon. It was too powerful against the wimpy D1 robots. The omega, also, would not have been added, except it's power usage limits its usefulness as a primary weapon. 9. On some levels, I added new secrets packed with D2 items. I'm not telling where, and in fact, I won't remember exactly where by the time anyone asks. I just picked places at random on levels lacking in firepower. 11. In multiplayer flag, most levels have the goals on opposite ends. In some cases, when the flag reappeared at random, one color would consistantly appear in a place that would give one team an advantage. On these levels the goals are placed very close together, so it is fair to both teams. Since flag has not been fully tested, there may be some cases where this still happens. Please tell me via email any problems you have while playing flag. 12. I added some multiplayer only secret areas in the lower levels to increase the available weapons a bit. Also, no shakers are available in multi since they are ONLY on the secret levels. Send comments, bug reports, etc to jon@inmind.com. If a bug shows up, I'll release a patch much like Parallax does for their fixes. (i.e. you shouldn't have to re-download the whole conversion.) Patches, as well as this conversion, are posted at: http://www.inmind.com/people/jon Credits: Ed Newton - assisting on the texture mapping tables used to build the conversion. David Bielawa - Adding a nice user interface to my original install program, and added the logic to install the D1 music to the install program. Achim Stemplat - For providing source code for Devil so I could customize it. Several of the people who got the original beta sent me lots of suggestions for bug fixes and improvements. Unfortunately, my historical email list got wiped out and I can't list you all by name. As I recall, 3 or 4 people sent me piles of useful suggestions. They were appreciated.
